LATEST OFSTED REPORT MAY 2023: Good - with many Outstanding features

We are writing proudly with the news that we have received a fantastic outcome from our Section 8 OFSTED inspection and are delighted to share the report with you! We are incredibly pleased with the outcome of this inspection: this declares that Canon Pyon CE Academy ‘continues to be an Outstanding school’ where children ‘thrive’.

The findings of this inspection are a credit to the staff, Governors, parents and pupils of Canon Pyon CE Academy. Working together we have achieved great things in spite of many changes, a pandemic and at a time when OFSTED have raised expectations for what they expect schools to achieve, this is a truly impressive achievement. The inspection was rigorous. All staff were either observed, interviewed or produced documentation to evidence practise during the one-day inspection visit. The focuses of the inspection were upon Safeguarding, Quality of Education, Behaviour, Personal Development and Leadership and Management.

We are incredibly proud of our children. The children at Canon Pyon CE Academy are the reason why we do what we do and their wellbeing will always be our priority. This view will always ensure our school remains a caring and happy place to learn and we will continue to ‘place great emphasis on promoting pupils’ self-belief and confidence’. The behaviour of children was observed to be ‘positive’ our embedded school values ensure that children ‘care about others and look after one another’ and help all children feel ‘happy and safe’. We were delighted with the inspectors’ recognition of the positive learning environment that was apparent during their visit to Canon Pyon CE Academy. This really does capture the morale amongst the staff who share an aspirational vision for the school and support each other to achieve their potential. We are filled with gratitude to all of them and immensely appreciative to be a part of that team.

PE GRANT FUNDING

Schools have been issued with funding from the Government as part of the Sport Premium initiative. This sum of money is to be spent by the school on ‘improving the quality of sport and PE’.

Our rational for spending the money is;

  • To improve the quality of the sport and PE that we are already offering to the children in all of the federation schools, ensuring all children benefit from the funding.

  • Offer training opportunities to staff to improve teaching and learning and for CPD.

  • Ensure the school is able to participate in local tournaments and hold federation events.

  • Encourage more participation in a wider range of after school activities for all children.

PERFORMANCE DATA 2022

Pupils develop detailed knowledge and skills across the curriculum and, as a result, achieve well. This is reflected in results from national tests and examinations.  For KS2 particularly, the attainment has increased year on year over the last 3 year period.  Below are the results for KS2 21-22 cohort:

KS1 children achieving the expected standard are as follows:

  • Reading – 50%

  • Writing – 33%

  • Maths – 33%

  • Science – 100%

80% of pupils were at expected for the ELG.
